Countdown To Counterpoint: Pretty Lights

Now that we are back from Camp Bisco, it is time to get everybody amped for Counterpoint Music Festival. So Countdown To Counterpoint is going to do just that. Feature artists. Some who you will definitely know, and some who hopefully we can teach you a thing to two about before you beautiful people arrive at what is shaping up to be the best festival of the year.

We figured the best act to start with would be the one none of us got to see at Camp Bisco: Pretty Lights.

The artistic vision on Derek Vincent Smith, better known as Pretty Lights, is wide, ranging, and unique and is going to be tearing up his tent September 27-30 in Atlanta, GA during the very first Counterpoint Music Festival.

Frequently sampling old R&B, blues, and jazz recordings, cutting them up and infusing them with his own expertly crafted beats, Pretty Lights creates a style of EDM that is unique to himself.

He is a must see at Counterpoint Music Festival not only due to his top notch show but also because Counterpoint is going to be out of this world. It is hosted on an 8,000-acre paradise filled with well-established rolling pastures, lakes, and woodlands that run 12 miles along the Chattahoochee River and will play host to multiple stages, art installations and a variety of other activities.

His style is varying as well and his festival presence is top notch. In 2011, I attended Bonnaroo Music And Arts Festival and was fortunate to witness his breathtaking show where he debuted his track I Know The Truth which is definitely the closest to dubstep that pretty lights has yet to come.

Pretty Lights’ innovation is also shown in his track Finally Moving, but even more so in his own remix of this very song which was released in 2008.

Press play and there is a 100% chance you recognize the sample from Etta James’ Something’s Got A Hold On Me that Avicii used three whole years later (2011) in his smash hit Levels.

The influence that the Notorious B.I.G. has on popular music today is indescribably large and personally, I never get tired of hearing the perfectly smooth and rhythmically outstanding voice of Christopher Wallace. Here shows not only Pretty Lights’ vocal sampling prowess but also his outstanding remixing.

Jay Z – Empire State Of Mind (Pretty Lights Remix)

Pretty Lights brings to the table a kind of soul that is rarely heard in the EDM scene. The feeling and emotion he can get out of inorganic instruments is not only incredible and beautiful but is unmatched in his field. Listen below to what I am talking about.
